1803 – The Louisiana Purchase is completed at a ceremony in New Orleans
1860 – South Carolina becomes the first state to attempt to secede from the U.S.
1951 – EBR-1 in Arco, Idaho (The first nuclear power plant to generate electricity) goes online. It powers four lightbulbs.
1957 – The first version of the Boeing 707 makes its first flight, kicking off the jet age.
1971 – Doctors Without Borders is founded in Paris, France
1989 – The US invasion of Panama deposes Manuel Noriega
1999 – Macau is handed over to China by Portugal
2007 – Queen Elizabeth II becomes the oldest monarch of the united kingdom, surpassing Queen Victoria
